The journey
Seven steps, one team beside you
- 1
Day 1
A free, confidential call
You โ or someone who loves you โ call our toll-free line or send the contact form. An admissions specialist listens to what is happening, answers practical questions and explains whether residential treatment might fit. There is no cost and no commitment.
- 2
Day 1โ3
Clinical assessment
By phone or video, a member of our clinical team asks about substance use, physical and mental health, medication, previous treatment and risks such as withdrawal. This helps us decide whether our programme is safe and suitable, or whether another type of care would serve you better.
- 3
Day 2โ4
Treatment plan, quote and date
You receive a written proposal: the recommended length of stay, what is included, the price and a possible admission date. Payment is arranged before admission, and on request we prepare documentation for an out-of-network insurance claim.
- 4
Before travel
Travel planning
We help you choose a practical flight, check your passport and documents, and explain what to pack. If someone is anxious about travelling alone, we discuss options for an escort.
- 5
Arrival
Airport pickup
A Hillhouse staff member meets you at Cape Town International Airport and drives you straight to the clinic. You never have to navigate the last stretch of the journey on your own.
- 6
First days
Medical intake and detox
On arrival you are welcomed, shown your room and seen for a medical intake. If you need withdrawal management, it starts under medical supervision. The first days are deliberately calm: rest, meals, sleep and getting to know the people around you.
- 7
Week 1 onward
Your programme begins
Once you are stable, you join the daily rhythm of individual therapy, groups and activities. Your therapist writes a personal treatment plan with you, which is reviewed as you progress through the 12 weeks.

Before you fly
What to bring
- Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your stay, with two blank pages
- Return ticket or travel itinerary
- List of current medication, in original packaging
- Relevant medical records or recent test results
- Comfortable clothing for a mild climate, plus a warm layer for evenings
- Walking shoes and swimwear
- A bank card for small personal expenses
Not sure about a medication or item? Ask admissions before you travel.
Cost
One inclusive price
For US clients, treatment costs USD 30,000 for the full 12-week programme, with four of those weeks sponsored. Payment is arranged before admission. Treatment is self-pay; we can provide documentation for an out-of-network claim, but reimbursement is not guaranteed. See full pricing.
For families
Calling for someone else
Many admissions begin with a call from a partner, parent or adult child. We can help you plan the conversation and, if your loved one is reluctant, discuss a professionally guided intervention.
By the time you land, there is only one thing left to do: walk out of the arrivals hall.

Questions
Frequently asked
How fast can I be admitted?
Often within a few days of the assessment, depending on bed availability and flights.
Do I need a visa?
US citizens visiting South Africa as tourists generally do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Always check the latest rules with the US State Department before you travel.
Can I bring my phone and laptop?
Yes, but access is limited during the programme so you can focus on recovery. Your therapist explains the arrangements and how to handle essential matters.
What if my loved one does not want to come?
Call us anyway. We can advise you on how to start the conversation and, where appropriate, discuss a professionally guided intervention.
What language is treatment in?
English. All therapy and daily life at the clinic are in English.
