The Returnto the Self
Recovery is not merely the cessation of an act. It is a courageous journey inward. We map your healing onto the oldest story ever told.
TheLifeThatNoLongerFits
Every hero begins in a familiar world that has slowly grown too small. The rituals of using have become the architecture of the day. Something inside — quieter than thought — knows this is no longer a life, but a survival. The first stirring is not yet a decision. It is a longing.
Allowing the longing for something different to become louder than the comfort of the familiar.

TheMiracleofWillingness
Out of the longing, a small miracle: the willingness to stop. Not yet to change, not yet to hope — simply to admit. This single fragile yes is the true beginning. From here, what once seemed impossible becomes a chance: the chance to actually go, to leave for South Africa, to begin.
Trusting that one moment of honesty is enough to set an entire journey in motion.

TheVoiceThatSays'NotYet'
Every hero hesitates. Fear puts on the mask of reason: the timing is wrong, the work too demanding, the family unprepared. This is not weakness — it is the threshold guardian, testing whether the longing is real. Beneath the resistance, the deeper self is still walking forward.
Recognising fear as a companion of courage, not its opposite.

Intake&FirstContact
The mentor arrives. We meet you first in the Netherlands and virtually with our South African clinical team — a careful, unhurried conversation about your history, your context and what is possible. Nothing is assumed. Everything is heard. From this map, we begin to choose the path.
Allowing yourself to be truly seen — perhaps for the first time in years.

TheFlighttoCapeTown
There is a moment, somewhere above the equator, when the old life releases its grip. Below you, a new continent. Around you, a stillness you had forgotten was possible. To cross this threshold is to declare, in flesh and air, that you are willing to become someone you do not yet know.
Letting the familiar fall away without yet knowing what will replace it.

PrimaryTreatmentorIntegratedCare
Two roads open within the same home. Primary Care and Integrated Care are distinct residential treatment paths, both delivered at The Hillhouse. Primary Care focuses on addiction recovery; Integrated Care offers additional clinical support for intertwined psychiatric, trauma or somatic needs. Your clinical team helps select the right path. The Re-entry House is our re-entry residence for the next stage, when you are ready.
Trusting the clinical wisdom of those who have walked this path before you.

TwelveWeeksofBecoming
Now the real work begins. Therapy after therapy, group after group, body and breath and silence. Old cravings rise like ghosts. Old stories demand to be retold. Some days are luminous. Some days are unbearable. This is exactly as it should be — for the trials are not obstacles to the journey. They are the journey.
Staying when every old reflex is screaming to leave.

YouDoNotWalkAlone
Around you, the company gathers. Therapists who have walked this terrain a thousand times. Group members whose stories begin to feel like your own. Unexpected conversations in the garden, in the kitchen, at sunset. Insights that arrive uninvited. Every hero's journey is, in truth, made possible by helpers — and yours has many.
Allowing yourself to receive — to lean, to trust, to be carried.

TheMomentYouWanttoFlee
And then, somewhere in the middle, the floor falls away. You arrive at the abyss — the deepest stratum of your pain, the grief beneath the grief, the wound the addiction was always trying to numb. Every hero, in this moment, wants to go home. To run. To use. Because to stand at one's own abyss and look in is the most terrifying thing a human can do. And yet — addiction is fleeing. Recovery is staying.
Choosing, against every instinct, to face what you have spent a lifetime avoiding.

BecomingWhoYouAlwaysWere
Because you stayed, something gives way. Not all at once — but unmistakably. The armour begins to fall. Beneath it, not a stranger, but the person you were before the world taught you to hide: tender, alive, capable of love. This is not the creation of a new self. It is the return of the true one.
Letting the false self die so the authentic self can finally breathe.

SeeingClearly,ForgivingHonestly
From this new vantage you can finally look back. You see what your addiction did — to yourself, to those you love, to the years that blurred. It is sobering and it is liberating, because seeing is the beginning of repair. You arrive at the place of atonement: forgiving yourself, and beginning to make amends to others.
Holding accountability and self-compassion in the same trembling hand.

Re-integrationintheNetherlands
When the deepest work is done, the world must be re-entered slowly. Our re-integration programme bridges the sanctuary and the everyday — practical skills, relapse-prevention scaffolding, and the gentle reweaving of relationships, work and meaning. You return — but as someone new.
Re-entering the world without re-becoming the person who first needed to leave it.

RecoveryCoaching&SoberLiving
Home, but hungry now — for this new path of light and tenderness toward yourself. Lifelong aftercare, intensive recovery coaching and sober living homes across the Netherlands hold the new self while it learns its own weight. The community you found in Cape Town never leaves you. The journey, in truth, has only just begun.
Carrying what you have learned back to those who still walk in the dark.
